Metro Istanbul, the city’s metro and rail operator affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, announced on Tuesday new rules on luggage, restricting the size and number of bags passengers may carry and requiring an additional fee for extra suitcases.
According to the announcement, bags larger than 120 × 60 × 50 centimeters or weighing over 30 kilograms (66.1 pounds) will no longer be allowed on the network.
Large camping-style backpacks will also be classified as suitcases under the new rules.
Each passenger will be allowed to carry only one large suitcase, in addition to either one cabin-size bag or one small to medium backpack.
Metro Istanbul said these measures were introduced to ensure the comfort and safety of both passengers with luggage and other commuters.
Travelers carrying more than the permitted allowance will be charged the equivalent of one additional ticket per extra suitcase, currently set at ₺35 (about $0.84).
Metro Istanbul added that luggage must not be placed on seats or block train doors and aisles; designated standing areas near the doors should be used instead.
The new regulation applies to the Istanbul metro network operated by Metro Istanbul, identified by the "M" symbol at station entrances, but does not cover the Marmaray suburban rail line, which is managed directly by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Marmaray passengers will not be subject to the newly announced luggage restrictions.
