Turkish authorities detained five suspects on Monday following a deadly anti-terrorism operation in which six Daesh terrorists were killed and three police officers died after terrorists opened fire on law enforcement in the northwestern province of Yalova.
Nine security personnel were wounded during the pre-dawn raid when terrorists ambushed officers at a residential address, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced. Eleven civilians—five women and six children—were safely evacuated from the building during the seven-hour operation.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said prosecutors in Yalova launched an investigation with five prosecutors assigned to the case. "The investigation is being conducted in a multifaceted and meticulous manner," Tunc said.
The raid began at 2:00 a.m. at a house on Seher Street in the Ismet Pasa neighborhood, part of coordinated strikes against 108 separate addresses across 15 provinces targeting Daesh networks. The operation concluded at 9:40 a.m.
"Daesh terrorists opened fire on our heroic police officers," Yerlikaya said in a statement from the ministry's Security and Emergency Situations Coordination Center.
The casualties included eight wounded police officers and one wounded security guard, all of whom were transported to Yalova State Hospital for treatment.
The terrorists killed in Monday's clash were Turkish citizens, Yerlikaya confirmed. The slain police officers were named as Yasin Kocyigit, Turgut Kulus and Ilker Pehlivan, all serving with the Yalova Provincial Security Directorate.
Security forces approached the raid with heightened caution due to the presence of women and children inside the targeted residence, officials said.
The prolonged standoff reflected authorities' efforts to minimize civilian casualties while neutralizing the armed terrorists.
The Yalova operation is the latest campaign against Daesh cells operating within Türkiye.
Over the past month, authorities have arrested 138 suspects linked to the terrorist organization, with an additional 97 placed under judicial supervision, according to Yerlikaya.
"Our struggle against terrorist organizations that try to legitimize violence by exploiting our faith and targeting the peace of our nation and public order continues with determination today as it did yesterday," the minister said.
Forces from multiple agencies participated in the operation, including teams from the Yalova Provincial Security Directorate, the Bursa Provincial Security Directorate Special Operations Branch, and the Yalova Provincial Gendarmerie Command. The deployment included commando units and armored vehicles.
Daesh has conducted several deadly attacks in Türkiye over the past decade, including a 2017 nightclub assault in Istanbul that killed 39 people during New Year's celebrations.
