Türkiye's ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) General Vice Chairman and Spokesman Omer Celik said that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) is attempting to transform the Greek Cypriot region from an area where Greeks live into military bases and headquarters for "certain countries."
"We see the activities of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. Recently, they are trying to turn the Greek side, which is a region where Greeks live, into military bases and headquarters of certain countries. These are futile efforts," Celik said.
The ruling party's official made the statements during a press conference at party headquarters on Tuesday regarding the Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting held under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and AK Party General Chairman.
Celik drew attention to the Greek Cypriots' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) agreements with certain countries, recalling that recently an agreement was made with Lebanon.
The ruling party's spokesman emphasized that the agreement between the Greek Cypriot administration and Lebanon is wholly unlawful, noting, "What the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus is doing is completely an occupation. Nothing else. This is an attempt to usurp the sovereignty rights of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)."
"Any approach that attempts to erase the Turkish Cyprus, that attempts to ignore Türkiye, will have no future here," he added.
"We see this activity of the Greek Cyprus Administration of Southern Cyprus. Recently, they are trying to turn the Greek side, which is a region where Greeks live, into military bases and headquarters of certain countries. These are futile efforts," Celik stated.
"There is also discussion about this agreement in Lebanon. Because this agreement resulted in a significant loss from Lebanon's actual maritime jurisdiction areas. Therefore, this is being questioned in Lebanese domestic politics. In other words, why did this happen... Some commentators say that there is a European Union aid package of €1 billion ($1.16 billion), and the Greek administration is attempting to exploit Lebanon there," he added.
Celik noted that the agreement between Greek Cyprus and Lebanon has caused Lebanon to experience a significant loss in its maritime jurisdiction areas. Discussion of the agreement is ongoing in Lebanese domestic politics regarding how it occurred.
Recalling that the Greek administration will be the EU presidency in the coming period, Celik continued: "There is news coming out that an approach in the form of a Mediterranean agreement that would resemble this occupation and cover the entire Mediterranean will be put forward. Let us say this clearly and openly. This is illegitimate from our perspective."
"The European Union has not been able to resist the spoiledness of the Greek Cypriot administration for years. It was dragged in the wake of this spoiledness, but at the point the world has reached, this spoiledness no longer remains just as the spoiledness of the Greek Cyprus. It means dealing a major blow to the main pillars of the European Union's security architecture," Celik noted.
"That is, we will not allow the sovereignty rights of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to be ignored, and a picture cannot be created and implemented where Türkiye is ignored in this way", he added.
"The Turkish Cyprus always has the right to announce areas within the Mediterranean where it will redetermine maritime jurisdiction areas within its own sovereignty. But as United Nations decisions clearly state, the behavior of the Greek Cyprus administration is clearly an occupying approach," Celik concluded.
