Insurance claims following last week's severe flooding in Istanbul have exceeded ₺4.5 billion ($90.7 million), with insurers receiving 3,017 damage reports involving homes, businesses and vehicles, according to figures released by the Insurance Association of Türkiye (TSB).
The flooding, which also affected Kocaeli, Antalya and several other provinces, caused extensive property damage, prompting thousands of residents and businesses to seek compensation through their insurance policies.
Of the claims filed in Istanbul, 2,041 involved residential properties, commercial buildings and industrial facilities, while another 976 concerned vehicles covered by comprehensive motor insurance.
Nearly ₺4 billion ($80.6 million) of Istanbul's reported losses fell under fire insurance policies, which can also provide coverage for flooding and water damage.
According to TSB data, approximately 1.2 million homes and businesses in Istanbul are covered by this type of insurance, although the figures also reveal significant gaps in protection.
Only 20% of Istanbul's residential properties have insurance coverage, while 43% of automobiles are covered by comprehensive motor insurance. Around 2.6 million vehicles in the city hold such policies.
Outside Istanbul, Kocaeli recorded the second-highest number of insurance claims related to the flooding, followed by more limited reports from Yalova, Antalya and Bursa.
Authorities said insurers were continuing to receive damage notifications, meaning the overall financial impact could rise as additional claims come in.
