Mugla earned $630.901 million from seafood exports in the first 9 months of this year, shipping 64,989 tons abroad.
Seyfettin Baydar, director of the Mugla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, told Anadolu Agency that the seafood sector holds an important place in the city’s agricultural production and exports.
Production reached 65,000 tons over the first 9 months, mainly sea bream and bass farmed in marine waters, Baydar noted, adding that export revenue rose to $630.901 million.
Last year’s same period saw similar output but only $545 million in export revenue, Baydar said.
Cleaning and processing fish into fillets and frozen goods adds value, and demand for these items persists, Baydar stated.
Seafood from Mugla reaches 70 countries, led by Japan, the U.S., Russia and European nations, Baydar added. “A significant portion of the seabass and sea bream consumed in Europe is supplied by Türkiye.”
The city has 342 production facilities with average annual output of 170,000 to 180,000 tons, Baydar noted.
Pointing out that the sector also provides jobs in processing, logistics and marketing, Baydar said: “Processing, filleting, cleaning and freezing products for export creates significant employment.
Together with production facilities, logistics and other areas, the sector provides jobs for tens of thousands of people.”
“Even a single one of our companies employs 5,500 people. Beyond production and exports, the seafood sector is of great importance for its contribution to employment and the city’s economy,” he continued.
