A new rain system moving across the Balkans entered Türkiye through Thrace, the country’s northwestern region bordering Greece and Bulgaria, on Friday morning. The system brings an end to the spring-like weather that followed the heavy rain and flooding in Istanbul last week.
The General Directorate of Meteorology issued yellow-code warnings for Edirne, Tekirdag and Kirklareli, three Thrace provinces along the Bulgarian and Greek borders.
The system brings an end to the spring-like weather that followed the heavy rain and flooding in Istanbul last week.
The rain is expected to spread later in the day to the north and west of the Marmara region, the Western Black Sea and the northern Aegean. Thunderstorms are forecast to cover the whole Marmara region in the afternoon and reach Istanbul, Türkiye’s largest city, toward the evening. The forecast does not give an exact hour.
No flood-like danger is flagged for Istanbul. However, the rain in Thrace may cause problems.
Locally heavy showers and thunderstorms of 21 to 50 kilograms per square meter are expected around Edirne, Kirklareli and Tekirdag, as well as in the western part of Canakkale, a province on the Dardanelles strait in northwestern Türkiye. Authorities ask residents to stay alert for floods, water inundation, lightning and transport disruptions.
No major change is expected elsewhere in the country, and temperatures in many cities are forecast to remain at autumn levels. Following today’s rain, Istanbul is expected to see partly cloudy skies on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, temperatures in Istanbul are forecast at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). In Ankara, the capital in central Anatolia, the forecast is 19°C with thunderstorms. Showers are also possible in the east of Marmara and along the coast and inland areas of the Western Black Sea.
Forecast temperatures for Saturday in other cities are as follows:
