Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is visiting Syria on Sept. 13-14 for talks with senior Syrian officials focused on bilateral relations, Syria’s integration process, economic cooperation, regional connectivity, and security developments, according to Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry.
Fidan is scheduled to meet Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani on Sunday, followed by a joint news conference expected to begin at 3:15 p.m. Türkiye time.
He is also expected to be received by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and hold talks with Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The visit follows Fidan’s meetings with al-Shaibani in Ankara on Aug. 6 and Sept. 8 and reflects what the ministry described as close cooperation established between Türkiye and Syria in multiple areas since Dec. 8, 2024.
During the visit, Fidan is expected to review efforts supported by Türkiye to establish lasting stability, peace and prosperity in Syria, as well as bilateral relations that Ankara says have advanced significantly since the fall of the former regime.
The talks will also focus on strengthening the institutional and legal framework for cooperation in trade, energy, transportation and connectivity, with particular attention to regional connectivity projects.
Fidan will discuss developments related to Syria’s integration process, including the dissolution of the SDF, and emphasize the importance of timely implementation of decisions taken on the issue.
He is also expected to exchange views on strengthening state authority in Syria on an inclusive basis and ensuring that all components of Syrian society, including Syrian Turkmens, contribute to the country’s unity and prosperity based on equal citizenship.
Fidan will reaffirm Türkiye’s support for preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty; strengthening state institutions; accelerating economic recovery; and restoring regional connections.
He is also expected to reiterate Türkiye’s support for building a Syria in which its people can live in peace and prosperity.
The talks will address developments in southern Syria and possible steps that could be taken with the international community in response to what Türkiye describes as Israel’s increasingly threatening actions against Syria’s security and stability.
