A vessel was struck by an unknown projectile 18 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman, sparking a fire that has since been extinguished, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said Saturday.
In a warning, UKMTO said it had received a report of an incident 18 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman.
"A verified source has reported that a vessel was struck by an unknown projectile which caused a fire that has been extinguished," the advisory said.
"There is no reported environmental impact. The vessel and crew are reported as safe," it added.
UKMTO listed the report's source as "verified" and said the report time remained "TBC" (to be confirmed) as of the advisory's issue date.
"Authorities are investigating," the advisory said, adding, "Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO."
Khasab is located on Oman's Musandam Peninsula, near the northern approach to the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that has seen repeated attacks on commercial shipping amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict.
