An oil tanker belonging to the UAE’s state-run oil company ADNOC was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Friday evening, August 14, local media reported, in the latest incident involving the company’s vessels in the strategic waterway.
No injuries were reported, and the situation was brought under control, according to the UAE’s official WAM news agency, which cited ADNOC. The company stressed the importance of protecting seafarers, maintaining freedom of navigation and safeguarding maritime security, the report said.
The latest attack came a day after the UAE accused Iran of attacking two ADNOC-linked vessels as they passed through the strait. No deaths or injuries were reported in that incident.
Last week, ADNOC reported that three of its tankers had been attacked in the waterway, while the UAE foreign ministry separately announced an attack on another ADNOC tanker a day later.
The UAE foreign ministry condemned the earlier incident as a "hostile Iranian attack" on the vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital shipping route for global energy supplies. Iran has effectively restricted access on the waterway and has carried out strikes on commercial ships since the war began in late February.
Continued attacks in the strait, which was free to transit before the Middle East war began, led to the collapse of an April ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
A June deal intended to serve as a starting point for negotiations on a permanent settlement had called for Iran and Oman, which also borders the waterway, to work out future arrangements for the strait with other Gulf countries and in line with applicable international law.
Last week, Iran set out conditions for fully reopening the strait, including an end to the war against Iran and its regional allies, the lifting of sanctions and compensation for wartime damage.
