The United Arab Emirates said late Thursday that two tankers belonging to its state oil company, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), were targeted while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, in an attack it attributed to Iran.
No casualties were reported. The UAE's state news agency, WAM, said the vessels sustained the attack without any deaths or injuries among crew.
The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned the strike, saying it amounted to a clear breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which affirms freedom of navigation and rejects the targeting of commercial vessels or the disruption of international shipping lanes. The ministry accused Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of carrying out "acts of piracy" and described the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure or "economic coercion or blackmail."
Such actions, the ministry said, pose a direct threat to regional stability, the safety of people in the area and global energy security.
The UAE called on Iran to halt what it termed "unprovoked attacks" and to commit fully to an immediate cessation of hostilities. It further demanded the "complete and unconditional reopening" of the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that the step was essential to safeguarding
The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the world's most critical energy corridors, a key transit route for about a quarter of global seaborne oil trade and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas as well as fertilizers.
Thursday's reported attack comes against the backdrop of a broader crisis in the strait that has drawn sustained international attention. In March, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2817, condemning Iran's attacks on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a measure that was cosponsored by 135 countries, the largest number of supporters for any Security Council resolution in history.
