Azerbaijan has sent humanitarian aid to Iran to help meet the needs of the Iranian people, officials said Monday, days after tensions between the two neighbors escalated over alleged drone attacks.
The assistance was dispatched by vehicles of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, according to the Azerbaijani APA news agency.
The humanitarian cargo includes 10 tons of flour, six tons of rice, and 2.4 tons of sugar.
Officials said the shipment also contains more than four tons of water, nearly 600 kilograms of tea and almost two tons of medicines and medical supplies.
APA reported the aid was sent “to meet the current needs of the neighboring and friendly Iranian people.”
According to APA, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ordered the humanitarian shipment after a March 8 phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The aid delivery comes after tensions increased between Baku and Tehran last week.
Azerbaijan accused Iran of launching drones targeting its Nakhchivan exclave during the ongoing Middle East escalation.
Baku warned it could retaliate over the alleged drone attacks, while Tehran denied any involvement.
Azerbaijan has also expanded its military and economic ties with Israel.
