An explosion was reported near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq, where U.S. troops are stationed, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists.

forces said the explosions resulted from "military training and security activities... and cause no danger".

Local media reported that the US-led coalition had detonated ordnance in the area.

An AFP journalist reported seeing grey smoke rising from near the airport.

The US-led coalition troops are scheduled to complete their withdrawal from Iraq by Sept. 30, having concluded their mission against Daesh group.

They had already withdrawn from other bases in Iraq in January and had begun pulling out from northern Iraq as well.

They are now only deployed at Erbil airport.

The presence of the US-led troops has been a persistent point of contention between Iraqi authorities and Tehran-backed armed factions, which have targeted coalition forces for years.

Coalition forces have downed many explosive-laden drones over Erbil and its airport over the years, and such attacks have intensified during the Middle East war that began in February.

During the war, Iran has announced several times striking US bases in northern Iraq.
