Severe rainfall across eastern Spain has left one person dead, disrupted air travel, shut down roads and schools, and caused widespread flooding across several regions.
The heavy rain hit Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia and the Balearic Islands overnight, with emergency crews called out to deal with flooding and other weather-related incidents.
In Olivella, a municipality in the Barcelona area, one person drowned after a vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.
Civil Protection officials said rainfall reached up to 120 kilograms per square meter in some areas, particularly around Valencia, as the severe weather continued to affect daily life across eastern Spain.
Valencia Airport remained closed throughout the night, while 23 flights were canceled at Barcelona's El Prat Airport. Several roads were also closed to traffic, regional power outages were reported, and schools were suspended for the day in a number of municipalities.
The flooding also damaged numerous homes and businesses. In Catalonia alone, firefighters responded to 270 incidents overnight as emergency operations continued across the region.
The disruption spread to sporting events, with the La Liga match between Levante and Athletic Bilbao postponed because of the heavy rainfall.
