Iran launched multiple salvos of ballistic missiles at Israel on Sunday, marking the first such attack since a fragile truce took effect in April, as Israeli air defenses moved to intercept the incoming projectiles and authorities ordered schools shut nationwide.

Israeli military confirmed that two ballistic missiles fired from Iran had been neutralized by its aerial defense systems. Shortly after that announcement, the military warned of a second wave of incoming fire. "An additional barrage of missiles was launched toward the State of Israel," the the military said, adding that its defense array was "currently identifying and intercepting threats."

Strikes come as the first Iranian ballistic missile attack on Israeli territory since a ceasefire came into effect in April, ending a period of relative quiet that had followed months of intense aerial exchanges.

The truce itself emerged from a broader escalation: in late February, Israel and the United States launched joint strikes against Iranian targets, drawing retaliatory missile fire that prompted nationwide emergency measures in Israel.

Negotiations in Pakistan in April failed to produce a lasting peace deal, though an open-ended extension of the ceasefire held, until Sunday.

Schools closed, activity restricted across Israel

Following a situational assessment, Israel's Home Front Command announced sweeping restrictions on civilian activity late Sunday, placing the entire country under a restricted activity level. All educational activity was prohibited, with the order taking effect Monday.

"No educational activities may be conducted," the command said in a statement. Authorities also directed the public to verify that safe rooms and shelters in their buildings were accessible, and to locate the nearest public shelter.

Sunday's missile fire comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon, where strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs earlier in the day killed at least two people and wounded 20, according to reports. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously cited Israeli attacks on Lebanon as a trigger for retaliatory action.
