Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out missile strikes on positions of armed groups in northern Iraq, claiming the United States was attempting to use them against Iran.
According to a statement by the IRGC, positions belonging to separatist groups in northern Iraq were targeted at 4:30 a.m. local time by a missile unit of the Revolutionary Guards.
“Three locations of separatist groups in the Iraqi region were hit... this morning,” the Guards said in a statement carried by the Tasnim news agency.
“If separatist groups in the region make any move against Iran's territorial integrity, we will crush them,” the statement added.
Separately, Iraqi security forces shot down two drones near a vital facility in Basra in southern Iraq on Friday evening, according to the Iraqi News Agency.
Iraq’s Security Media Cell said in a statement that two unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted and downed outside one of the country’s “vital facilities” in Basra.
Authorities did not specify the facility involved. No damage or casualties were reported.
In another incident, the Security Media Cell said several rockets were launched from a vehicle in Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad, at around 8:20 p.m. local time.
Some of the rockets landed in empty areas far from Baghdad International Airport, causing no reported casualties or material damage.
Security forces later seized the vehicle used in the attack, which still contained additional rockets before they could be launched. The remaining rockets were secured by specialized technical teams.
Authorities said an investigation had been launched into the incident and that further details would be announced later.
In northern Iraq, the governor of Erbil said a drone was shot down near a hotel in the city, according to the Iraqi News Agency.
No damage or casualties were reported in the incident.
Iran has launched missiles and drones toward Israel, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting what it describes as U.S. military assets since Feb. 28.
Some of the attacks have caused casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure, including ports and residential buildings.
Tehran says the attacks are in response to a U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran that has killed hundreds of people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials.
Meanwhile, Iraqi factions aligned with Iran said they had participated in attacks targeting “American bases” in Iraq, according to media channels affiliated with those groups.
