Iran’s top negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Sunday that Tehran would respond more quickly and forcefully to future U.S. attacks, a day after American strikes targeted Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf.
“The Americans must have understood that the era of proportionate responses has come to an end,” Ghalibaf said in a speech carried by Iranian state media.
“Any aggression against Iran’s interests and security will receive a faster, more intense and more painful response,” he added.
In a separate version of the remarks published on his Telegram channel, Ghalibaf said Washington should understand that the rules of the war against Iran had changed “before it is too late.”
“From now on, any attack against Iran’s interests and security will receive a faster, heavier and more painful response,” he said.
His remarks came after U.S. forces struck several Iranian tankers in the Gulf, prompting Tehran to retaliate against U.S. naval forces.
Iran said Sunday that its forces attacked a U.S. naval drone attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz, hours after targeting U.S. ships in retaliation for American strikes on three Iranian oil tankers.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Sunday that its Aerospace Force fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and a Navy destroyer.
The IRGC claimed both vessels were damaged and withdrew from the area after what it described as harassment of Iranian ships and participation in a maritime blockade.
It said the warships left the “engagement area” after sustaining damage.
The IRGC said U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, had acknowledged that two U.S. Navy warships were targeted, describing the statement as confirmation of the Iranian operation.
CENTCOM said Saturday that the ships successfully evaded the Iranian attacks and that no U.S. personnel were harmed.
The IRGC warned that continued U.S. military action would trigger “heavier” responses from Iran’s armed forces.
