Authorities in Abu Dhabi are responding to a fire caused by an Iranian drone attack at a facility in the Ruwais industrial complex, the emirate’s media office said Tuesday.
Ruwais Industrial Complex is one of the Middle East's largest refinery hubs. The complex houses Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) facilities that can refine up to 922,000 barrels of oil per day. Ruwais serves as the main hub for the Emirate's downstream operations.
"The Ruwais refinery has halted operations out of precaution," the source said to AFP, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, after the attack caused a fire in the Ruwais Industrial City where it is based. The source did not say whether the refinery had been hit.
State-owned oil company Adnoc describes its Ruwais facility as "the world's fourth-largest single-site refinery".
"Authorities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi are responding to a fire at a facility within the Ruwais Industrial City, caused by a drone attack. No injuries have been reported so far," the Abu Dhabi media office said in a statement on X.
Authorities did not say whether any energy infrastructure had been hit.
The incident came amid regional escalation that flared up since Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, and injuring over 10,000 others.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that are home to US military assets.
