Open-source intelligence (OSINT) monitoring accounts reported Saturday that elements of Iran's 92nd Armored Division were moving T-72M and T-72M1 main battle tanks south along Road 39 on the Ahvaz-Abadan Expressway toward the coastal city of Abadan, near Iran's borders with Iraq and Kuwait, according to multiple OSINT-focused outlets and social media accounts.
According to these OSINT accounts, photographs and video footage geolocated to coordinates near the Ahvaz-Abadan Expressway in Khuzestan province purportedly show T-72M and T-72M1 tanks being transported on heavy flatbed trailers.
One OSINT-focused outlet described the movement as involving "a subset" of the division's armor assets rather than a full unit deployment, characterizing it as limited in scale.
Multiple OSINT accounts citing the reports said this was not the first time such movement had reportedly been observed in the area.
Iran's 92nd Armored Division, based in Ahvaz, is described in open-source military assessments as one of the Iranian army's primary conventional armor units, with a presence in Khuzestan province dating to the years following the 1979 revolution.
Some analysts cited in this reporting characterized the reported southbound movement as defensive or deterrent in posture, intended to reinforce coastal areas across the Abadan-Mahshahr-Genaveh sector, rather than indicating preparation for offensive operations, and noted the timing coincided with the period of intensive U.S. airstrikes on Iran's southern provinces in late July and early August.
Washington and Tehran signed a war-ending memorandum on June 18 and later began negotiations on a final agreement, but the talks stalled over disagreements on security arrangements and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran on Feb. 28.
Tehran says the attacks have killed more than 3,000 people, while Iran has responded with missile and drone strikes that it says caused casualties among U.S. and Israeli forces.
