The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it had assassinated Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, a senior Hamas commander, in an airstrike targeting Gaza City.
Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, identified as one of the founding members of the Al-Qassam Brigades—the armed wing of Hamas—was killed in the strike that hit the al-Sabra neighborhood, according to the Israeli army.
According to the Israeli army's statement, Al-Issa held multiple senior roles within the group, including as the Head of the Training Headquarters and a member of Hamas’ General Security Council.
He was also said to have played a central role in directing the organization’s force buildup within the Gaza Strip..
At least 51 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured on Saturday as Israeli forces targeted multiple areas across Gaza, including sites sheltering displaced civilians awaiting aid.
The airstrike comes amid growing international pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign in Gaza, which has continued since October 2023. Since then, Israel’s military operations have killed more than 56,400 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, according to official reports from Gaza health authorities.
Despite these figures, the Israeli government has repeatedly rejected global appeals for a ceasefire.
