Israel’s air force carried out four airstrikes on the abandoned Abu al-Duhur Military Airfield in eastern Idlib province in northern Syria, local media reported.

The strikes took place at around 3:00 a.m. local time (12:00 a.m. GMT) Tuesday, with Israeli warplanes hitting the airfield four times, according to Syria TV. No information was immediately available on deaths or injuries.

Syrian authorities had not issued an official statement on the strikes at the time of reporting.

Strategic airfield anchors Idlib

The Abu al-Duhur Military Airfield is located in southeastern Idlib countryside, about 27 kilometers east of Saraqib and next to the town of Abu al-Duhur.

The airfield is strategically located between Idlib, Hama, and Aleppo provinces, near the Syrian desert. It was one of the former regime’s major military bases in northern Syria and served as a base for military operations in the area.

Estimates of the airfield’s size vary, with some sources putting it at about 16 square kilometers and others at roughly 23 square kilometers. The facility includes several runways.

Israeli strikes expand as tensions rise in Syria

Before Bashar Assad’s regime fell, Israel conducted strikes in Syria targeting Iranian forces and positions linked to Hezbollah. Since the regime’s ouster in December 2024, the Israeli military has stepped up its campaign, hitting weapons and missile depots as well as strategic military sites across the country.

In southern Syria, Israeli forces have also made repeated incursions, setting up military checkpoints, searching people and homes, and detaining civilians. Israel has cited security threats in the area to justify its actions.

The reported strikes come after Israeli sources said last week that Washington had turned down an Israeli request to strike targets inside Syria. Israel’s Channel 13 reported that the request did not say which targets Israel wanted to hit.
