Several United Nations peacekeepers were injured after their position in southern Lebanon came under attack Friday, as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continued to escalate.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that the strike targeted a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) position in the town of Qawzah, wounding several Ghanaian soldiers serving in the mission.

The report did not specify who carried out the attack, and UNIFIL had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting.

Beirut calls for international intervention

Following the incident, Lebanese President Joseph Avn called on the international community and the United Nations to intervene to halt Israeli military operations in the country.

In a written statement from the presidency, Avn said he had been in contact with what he described as "brotherly and friendly" countries as part of diplomatic efforts to stop Israeli strikes targeting multiple areas, including southern Lebanon, the Bekaa region and Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiye.

The attacks have caused deaths and injuries, as well as widespread destruction and the displacement of thousands of people, the statement said.

Israel expands strikes across Lebanon

The latest incident comes during a broader escalation between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

On Mar. 2, the Israeli military said sirens sounded in northern Israel after rockets were detected coming from Lebanon. Israel later announced it had launched airstrikes across the country, including attacks on Beirut.

Israeli forces subsequently expanded their operations with air and naval strikes and decided to widen a ground offensive inside Lebanese territory, according to the reports.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli attacks carried out since Mar. 2 have killed 217 people and wounded 798 others.
