Danish shipping giant Maersk said Friday it is suspending two major intercontinental transit routes due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The company had previously announced it was halting new bookings in the Gulf region “until further notice.”
“Considering the escalating conflict affecting safe navigation in the Gulf region, we have made the decision to temporarily suspend the FM1 Service (connecting Far East to Middle East) and as well the ME11 Service (connecting Middle East to Europe),” the company said in a statement.
The suspended routes connect major trade corridors between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
The move comes as tensions in the Middle East remain high, with Israel and the United States continuing large-scale strikes on Iran for a seventh consecutive day.
Iranian authorities say more than 1,000 people have been killed in the attacks, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, several senior military officials and dozens of schoolgirls.
Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets.
