U.S. President Donald Trump said he was on the same page as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the war against Iran, saying the Israeli leader would “do whatever I want him to do.”
“He'll do whatever I want him to do. He's a very, very good man,” Trump told reporters at an air base in Maryland near Washington.
Trump was asked about his relationship with Netanyahu after Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the two leaders had held a “lengthy and dramatic phone call” overnight.
The report did not provide further details.
Trump described Netanyahu as a wartime leader and said he did not think the Israeli prime minister was treated well.
“He's a wartime prime minister, and I just don't think they'd treat him well,” Trump said.
Trump also joked about running for prime minister in Israel.
“I'm right now at 99% in Israel. I could run for prime minister,” Trump said.
“So maybe after I do this, I'll go to Israel and run for prime minister. I had a poll this morning,” he added.
Trump also reiterated his claim that the war would end “very quickly” after saying he had called off a new attack that would have ended the cease-fire.
Trump said he was “in no hurry” to strike a peace deal with Iran and would give the diplomatic push “one shot.”
“We'd have to open the Strait; that would open immediately. So we're going to give this one shot,” Trump said, referring to the Strait of Hormuz.
He said it was better “to see a few people killed as opposed to a lot,” but added: “We could do it either way.”
Asked whether it had taken longer than expected to reach a deal with Iran, Trump listed the durations of other U.S. wars, including Afghanistan and Vietnam.
“I’m in for three months and much of it’s been a ceasefire,” he said. “We’re going to give this one shot. I’m in no hurry.”
Trump also claimed that the U.S. “has essentially taken over” Iran.
