Russia is providing Iran with targeting information to help strike United States forces in the Middle East, according to a report by The Washington Post citing three officials familiar with the intelligence.
The reported assistance marks the first indication that another major U.S. adversary may be participating, even indirectly, in the conflict.
According to the report, the rapidly expanding war now involves one of Washington’s main nuclear-armed rivals, which possesses advanced intelligence-gathering capabilities.
Israel and the United States have continued large-scale attacks on Iran since Feb. 28, which Iranian authorities say have killed more than 1,000 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials.
Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as several countries hosting U.S. military assets.
Since the conflict began, Russia has reportedly provided Iran with intelligence on the locations of U.S. military assets, including warships and aircraft, according to the report.
The information was cited by three officials who spoke to The Washington Post on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
“It does seem like it’s a pretty comprehensive effort,” the report quoted one of the officials as saying.
The Russian Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment, the newspaper added.
