Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte's remarks amounted to an "admission" that European countries knowingly participated in the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
Baqaei made the comments on U.S.-based social media platform X after sharing remarks by Rutte, who said during a panel that 5,000 sorties had been conducted from European bases following the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran that began Feb. 28.
"This is yet another straightforward admission by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Europe knowingly and actively participated in the U.S.-Israeli war of aggression against the nation of Iran, despite the repeated denials issued throughout the war," Baqaei said.
Baqaei said the European Union, its member states and NATO countries should be held accountable for what he described as political, military, logistical or other forms of support for the U.S. and Israeli attacks.
He said such support contributed to "death and destruction" and argued that European citizens had the right to demand answers from their governments over decisions to support or participate in the war.
"The EU, its member states, and NATO members must be held accountable for their involvement, including any political, military, logistical, or other support that contributed to death and destruction, as well as for the consequences that continue to be felt today," he said.
Baqaei also said rising fuel prices and other difficulties resulting from the war should be examined in connection with the role of European governments.
"The rise in fuel prices and other hardships resulting from this unlawful war should also be examined in light of the role played by European governments in enabling and supporting it," he said.
Baqaei added that Rutte's role as NATO secretary-general, including actions taken under his authority, should also face scrutiny and investigation.
