A Bahraini opposition group claims that Mohammed al-Mousawi, a young detainee from Muharraq, died in custody after being tortured following his arrest at a security checkpoint approximately one week ago.
Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society said the death marks the first fatality in what it describes as an escalating detention and torture campaign by the Bahraini government amid regional tensions following the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
"The citizens bid farewell to the martyr Muhammad Al-Mousawi and condemn arrest campaigns, torture, accusations of betrayal and sectarian incitement," Al-Wefaq said in a statement posted to X.
The group described Mousawi as "the first victim of arrest campaigns and torture and the state of incitement and accusations of betrayal being led by the regime" in connection with the war on Iran.
Mousawi was arrested illegally on sectarian grounds while with friends at a security checkpoint in Bahrain, according to Al-Wefaq.
Bahrain, a strategic location in the Persian Gulf hosting the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters, maintains close ties with Saudi Arabia and the United States.
The kingdom has faced periodic tensions with Iran and has a significant Shia majority population alongside a Sunni-led government.
The claims come as regional tensions remain elevated following months of U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran, which began Feb. 28 and have killed over 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
No official statement from the Bahraini government regarding Mousawi's death or the detention campaign allegations has been issued.
