U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday denied a report by Axios that he offered Iran sanctions relief and the release of frozen funds as the Middle East war drags on.
“Axios just released a story that ‘Trump’ offered Sanctions Relief and Frozen Funds to Iran. This is untrue. I offered them NOTHING!” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
Axios and CNN reported earlier Monday that Trump was willing to offer economic sanctions relief and release frozen funds to Iran in exchange for concrete progress related to its nuclear program, citing a U.S. official.
Washington is engaging in “positive and constructive” talks through mediators, CNN quoted a U.S. official as saying, adding that negotiators would not finalize an agreement unless nuclear-related concerns were fully resolved.
Trump later said the United States was going to win the Iran war “one way or the other,” predicting it would happen “pretty quickly.”
The prospective diplomatic opening came after Trump on Saturday rejected an Iranian proposal aimed at easing tensions and reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, calling Tehran’s conditions “unacceptable” amid the seven-month Iran war.
Trump said Sunday that he expected additional negotiations with Tehran this week, asserting that Iranian officials had “overplayed” their hand during earlier talks.
