A new customs gate planned between Türkiye and Bulgaria aims to reduce passenger congestion, especially during holiday periods, and accelerate export crossings toward Europe, Türkiye’s Trade Ministry said.

Work is underway under the ministry’s coordination to open the new gate north of the existing Kapikule-Kapitan Andreevo customs crossings, the ministry said in a statement.

Delegations headed by Deputy Trade Minister Sezai Ucarmak and Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev met at Kapikule on Sept. 10 as part of the process.

The meeting addressed steps to reduce congestion at existing customs gates, especially during holiday periods, prevent citizens from waiting in long queues, and ensure faster and more effective border crossings.

The two sides also agreed to coordinate legal and technical work to implement the new customs gate as soon as possible.

The ministry said the project aims to accelerate export processes toward Europe, reduce congestion faced by exporters at border crossings, and contribute to faster and uninterrupted trade.

After the meeting, delegations from the two countries inspected the site where the new customs gate will be built and discussed the work to be carried out on location.
