Türkiye's Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that Syria's new government has formally requested military assistance to strengthen its defense capabilities and combat terrorist organizations, particularly Daesh.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing held at the Istanbul Fair Center during the IDEF 2025 17th International Defense Industry Fair, Defense Ministry sources said Türkiye is working to provide training, advisory services and technical support to enhance Syria's defense capacity.
"The Syrian administration has officially requested support from Türkiye to strengthen its defense capacity and fight against all terrorist organizations, primarily Daesh," ministry sources said. "In line with this request, our work continues to provide training, advisory and technical support to increase Syria's defense capacity."
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions in southern Syria, where Israeli strikes have intensified conflicts between the Druze community and Damascus authorities in the Sweida region.
Ministry sources noted that Israel's recent escalated attacks have particularly heightened tensions between the Druze community and the Damascus government in the southern Sweida area.
Türkiye emphasized its commitment to supporting Syria's territorial integrity and political unity. "Türkiye's priority goal is to support Syria's political unity and territorial integrity and to lead efforts to ensure lasting peace in the region," the sources stated.
The Defense Ministry also addressed questions about the integration of the PKK terrorist group's Syria branch. Sources referenced a March 10 agreement between the Syrian government and the PKK terror group's Syria branch, saying concrete implementation is crucial for regional stability.
"The PKK terror group's Syria branch must concretely demonstrate that it complies with the agreement it made with the Damascus government," ministry sources said. "Developments on the issue are being closely monitored with our relevant institutions."
Türkiye has maintained that Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty rights are essential for both Turkish and regional stability.
The country continues to work in close cooperation with Syria's new government as part of its broader strategy to combat terrorism and maintain regional peace.
The assistance package would focus on capacity building rather than direct military intervention, according to the ministry sources, as Türkiye seeks to support Syria's ability to independently address security challenges within its borders.
