Chinese President Xi Jinping called for expanded cooperation with Serbia in artificial intelligence, energy and infrastructure during talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Beijing on Monday.

Vucic is the latest foreign leader to visit China in recent months as countries navigate economic uncertainty linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Serbia has maintained close ties with Beijing and benefited from growing Chinese investment over the past decade.

“The two sides should increase cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, green energy and advanced manufacturing,” Xi said during talks with Vucic at the Great Hall of the People, according to Chinese state media.

Xi also called for greater cooperation in transportation and energy infrastructure under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

He further urged support for “genuine multilateralism” amid what he described as “turmoil” in international affairs.

Serbia, China sign agreements on trade, technology

The two countries signed multiple bilateral agreements covering trade, technology and education. They also issued joint statements following the talks.

China is among Serbia’s top five investors, according to Serbia’s Finance Ministry.

Chinese-backed projects currently underway in Serbia include Belgrade’s metro system, a major road tunnel in the capital and several bridges.

China also built a high-speed rail line in Serbia that opened in October 2025.

Trade volume between China and Serbia has reached approximately $9.37 billion, making Beijing Belgrade’s second-largest trading partner.

Vucic's first state visit to China

Vucic began his five-day visit to China on Sunday, according to Chinese state news agency, Xinhua.

The Serbian president's visit runs through May 28.

Although Vucic has previously visited China for international summits and forums, this marks his first official state visit to the country.

During the visit, Vucic is scheduled to hold talks with Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang to review bilateral relations and discuss international issues.

Xi also awarded Vucic China’s “Friendship Medal” on Monday, underscoring the close ties between the two countries.
