Arda Guler delivered a standout performance with two goals, including a record-setting effort, but his night ended with a red card as Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 4-3 to advance to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
The quarter-final second-leg clash at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena opened at a relentless pace, with Real Madrid taking the lead just 35 seconds into the match through Arda Guler. The young Turkish international capitalized on a misplaced pass from Manuel Neuer, intercepting the ball and finishing calmly.
Bayern responded quickly, leveling the score in the sixth minute through Aleksandar Pavlovic. However, Real Madrid pushed forward again, and Guler restored the lead with a direct free kick before the half-hour mark.
His performance placed him among a select group of Real Madrid players to score two or more goals from outside the penalty area in a single Champions League match.
The match continued to swing back and forth, with Harry Kane equalizing for Bayern before Kylian Mbappe put Real Madrid ahead again just before halftime.
The turning point came late in the second half when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off after committing a foul and delaying play, leaving Real Madrid with ten men.
Bayern took advantage of the numerical superiority, scoring twice in the closing minutes through Luis Diaz and Michael Olise to secure a 4-3 victory and a place in the semi-finals.
Despite his decisive contributions, Guler’s match ended on a sour note. After the final whistle, referee Slavko Vincic issued him a red card for continuing his protests.
In the other quarter-final, Arsenal advanced after a goalless draw against Sporting CP, having secured a narrow first-leg win away from home.
With the quarter-finals concluded, the semi-final matchups have been set: Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal will take on Atletico Madrid.
