Besiktas announced the departure of head coach Sergen Yalcin after the two sides agreed to terminate his contract following another underwhelming season for the Istanbul club.
The decision came after a meeting between Yalcin and club president Serdal Adali at the club’s training ground in Istanbul on Monday. Both sides assessed the team’s disappointing campaign and discussed the club’s direction ahead of the new season. Besiktas once again fell short in both domestic and European competitions.
Besiktas brought Sergen Yalcin back earlier in the season after parting ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjær, hoping the experienced coach could steady the team and push it back into the title race.
The Black Eagles struggled to keep pace with their rivals throughout the season and remained far from repeating the success of their 2020-2021 title-winning campaign, when Yalcin led the club to the league title.
The black-and-whites drifted away from their targets in European competitions and the Turkish Cup before wrapping up the season with a 2-2 draw against Caykur Rizespor.
Besiktas ended the 2025-2026 Super Lig season in fourth place with 60 points, finishing 17 points behind champion Galatasaray after posting 17 wins, nine draws and eight defeats in 34 matches.
The black-and-whites never fully got back into the title race, fueling frustration among supporters over the team’s inconsistent performances throughout the season.
Losses to Konyaspor in the cup and Trabzonspor at home in the league further increased pressure on coach Sergen Yalcin and the club’s board, with fans calling for resignations and occasionally booing the players.
The club will play in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round next season if Trabzonspor wins the Turkish Cup, while a victory for Konyaspor would send Besiktas into the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round instead.
