The Presidential Half Marathon, one of the major running events held in Türkiye’s capital, began in Ankara with a starting signal that sent runners onto the city’s central avenues.
The races started in front of the July 15 Democracy Museum on Presidential Boulevard, a museum dedicated to the July 15, 2016, coup attempt in Türkiye.
Organizers split the event into three categories of 21, 10 and 4.4 kilometers, giving both experienced distance runners and casual participants a route to take part in.
The 21-kilometer race, which matches the distance of a half marathon, follows a course that begins on Presidential Boulevard and winds through several of Ankara’s main thoroughfares.
After the start, the 21-kilometer route runs along Bestepe Street and Bahriye Ucok Boulevard, passing through the area surrounding the Presidential Complex.
The course then continues along Marshal Fevzi Cakmak Street and Ismet Inonu Boulevard, two of the major roads that connect different parts of the capital.
Runners later reach Ataturk Boulevard, one of Ankara’s best-known central avenues, followed by Cumhuriyet Street and Hippodrome Street.
The final stretch of the 21-kilometer course runs along Fatih Sultan Mehmet Boulevard before returning to Presidential Boulevard, where the race began.
A half marathon covers 21.0975 kilometers, exactly half of the 42.195-kilometer marathon, and the 21-kilometer category in Ankara follows this standard road-racing distance through the capital’s central districts.
The shorter 10-kilometer and 4.4-kilometer races took place alongside the half marathon, so participants of different ages and fitness levels shared the same event and the same starting area.
