Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor is reportedly seeking a loan deal for Manchester United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana, after Türkiye international Ugurcan Cakir completed a €36 million ($42.2 million) transfer to Galatasaray.
Cakir, who had been the captain of the Black Sea club, joined Galatasaray, which had reportedly also considered Onana as its first option.
As the club is looking for an experienced goalkeeper to fill the vacancy of the world's most expensive 9th goalkeeper, and the transfer window is already closed for England, the claret and blue side has a strong chance to finalize the deal before the Turkish transfer window closes on Sept. 12.
Onana’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt since the club signed Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day.
Although Manchester United officials insisted they were open to keeping four senior goalkeepers, head coach Ruben Amorim has expressed his preference for a smaller squad, especially given the absence of European competition this season, BBC reported.
Alongside Onana, United’s roster currently includes Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, and the newly acquired Lammens. Reports suggest that either Onana or Bayindir could be allowed to leave before the Turkish window closes.
Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023 for €50.2 million ($58.84 million), with then-manager Erik ten Hag eager to reunite with his former Ajax player. However, the Cameroon international has struggled to establish himself as the first choice.
He missed the preseason with a hamstring injury and was left out of the opening three Premier League fixtures in favor of Bayindir.
His only recent start came in last month’s English Football League Cup match against fourth-tier side Grimsby Town, where a mistake contributed to United’s elimination.
Despite being United’s starting goalkeeper in the 2024 Europa League final defeat against Tottenham, his performances have been marked by inconsistency, leading to questions over the decision to replace former club stalwart David de Gea with him.
While no agreement has yet been finalized, a move to Trabzonspor is viewed as an opportunity for Onana to revive his career by securing more regular playing time, reports suggest.
