Türkiye's rising tennis star Zeynep Sonmez exited the WTA 500 Merida Open Women's Tennis Tournament in Mexico after a tough quarterfinal defeat to Spain's Cristina Bucsa. Ranked 81st in the world, the 23-year-old Turkish player fell 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets to the world's No. 61.
Sonmez advanced directly to the main draw and secured victories over American Caroline Dolehide, Russian Anastasia Potapova, and the tournament's home wildcard to reach the quarterfinals.
Played on Merida's outdoor courts, the first set saw Bucsa take control with effective returns and service breaks for a 6-3 win. Sonmez leveled up at 4-4 in the second set but Bucsa closed strongly to claim a 6-4 victory.
