Türkiye’s national football team will take on North Macedonia today in a friendly match at Chobani Stadium as the side steps up its preparations before the World Cup.
The match, which is set to kick off at 8:30 p.m.
Türkiye's local time, will mark the ninth meeting between the two national teams at the senior level. Türkiye goes into the fixture with a clear historical edge, having won five of the previous eight encounters.
Türkiye and North Macedonia have met eight times so far, with four matches played in North Macedonia, three in Türkiye and one at a neutral venue.
Those games were split evenly between competitive fixtures and friendlies, with each team using the meetings at different stages of qualification campaigns and preparation periods.
The Turkish side, known domestically as the Crescent-Stars because of the crescent and star on the national flag, has collected five wins from those matches. The remaining fixtures ended in two draws and one defeat for Türkiye.
Across the eight meetings, Türkiye scored 14 goals and conceded nine, underlining its overall advantage in the fixture.
Türkiye has also performed strongly in away matches against North Macedonia. In four games played on North Macedonian soil, the national team came away with three victories, scoring six goals and allowing only two.
At home, Türkiye has played North Macedonia three times, recording two wins and one defeat. The only loss in the overall series came in a friendly match played in 2006.
The two teams last faced each other nine years ago, again in a friendly. That match was played in Skopje under then-Türkiye coach Fatih Terim and ended in a goalless draw.
Since then, the sides have not met at senior level, making Monday’s match their first encounter since 2017 and their ninth overall.
The first meeting between the two teams took place on Aug. 31, 1994, when Türkiye won 2-0 in a friendly. Türkiye also won the following friendly in 1995 by a 2-1 scoreline.
The teams later met in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers and the 2004 European Championship qualifiers before returning to friendly competition in 2006 and 2017.
In the full head-to-head record, Türkiye has beaten North Macedonia five times, drawn twice and lost once.
