Turkish national player Zeynep Sonmez advanced to the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after defeating world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, marking the biggest win of her career.
Competing on clay courts in Stuttgart, Germany, Sonmez delivered a composed and controlled performance against one of the top-ranked players on the WTA Tour. She secured the victory with identical 6-2 sets, closing out the match in straight sets without dropping momentum.
Ranked No. 79 in the world, Sonmez achieved a personal milestone by defeating a top-10 opponent for the first time in her career, underlining her growing presence on the international stage.
The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is a WTA 500-level event, a category that sits just below the top-tier tournaments in women’s professional tennis. Played on clay, the surface demands endurance, tactical awareness, and consistency—qualities Sonmez demonstrated throughout the match.
Her performance in Stuttgart reflects not only a strong individual showing but also a broader step forward for Turkish tennis in high-level international competition.
Following her victory, Sonmez reflected on her rising profile, noting that her frequent travel limits her time in Türkiye. However, she acknowledged that when she does return, recognition from the public has begun to increase.
Asked if she’s a household name in Türkiye, Sonmez said she’s often traveling but still gets recognized back home.
“It’s pretty crazy—I’m not used to it. But it feels great when people want a photo or an autograph,” she said.
Sonmez is set to face world No. 25 Leylah Fernandez in the second round, as she looks to build on her breakthrough result and continue her run in Stuttgart.
