Zeynep Yetgil Kamal wins Türkiye’s 1000th Mediterranean Games medal

Türkiye's 1000th Mediterranean Games medal came from wrestler Zeynep Yetgil Kamal on the fifth day of the 20th Mediterranean Games, held in the southern Italian city of Taranto.

Yetgil Kamal defeated Spain's Carla Jaume Soler by technical superiority, 10-0, in the women's 53-kilogram final to secure the milestone gold medal.

Women wrestlers deliver best day

Türkiye's women wrestlers had their most successful day of the competition, winning four gold medals on the fifth day.

Zehra Demirhan topped the women's 50-kilogram category, Zeynep Yetgil Kamal won the 53-kilogram final, Elvira Suleyman Kamaloglu took the 57-kilogram title, and Nesrin Bas won at 68 kilograms.

Ebru Dagbasi and Kadriye Aksoy Kocak added silver medals in the 62-kilogram and 76-kilogram categories, respectively.

With four gold, four silver, and two bronze medals won in wrestling alone on the day, Türkiye's overall medal count rose to 37—comprising 17 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze medals. The count kept Türkiye in second place in the medal standings, behind host nation Italy.

Swimming and bocce add to tally

In swimming, Berke Saka won silver in the men's 200-meter individual medley with a time of 1:58.66, while Polat Uzer Turnali took bronze in the 200-meter butterfly, finishing in 1:57.54.

In bocce, Mine Turker won silver in the women's volo final, losing 29-27 to France's Marie Groleaz. Abdullah Kaplan secured bronze in the men's raffa third-place match, defeating France's Aurelien Corbihan 7-6.

Volleyball team stays unbeaten in group

Türkiye's men's national volleyball team defeated Kosovo 3-2 in its second Group B match of the fifth day, winning by set scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16 and 15-10.

The result put the team at two wins from two matches in the group. The team's third match is scheduled against Greece on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Football team advances with hat-trick win

In a separate result, Türkiye's under-20 national football team defeated North Macedonia 3-0 in its second Group A match, with forward Ozder Ozcan scoring a hat-trick in the 26th, 41st and 60th minutes.

The win raised the team's points to four following a 2-2 draw with Morocco in its opening match. The team's final group match is set for Wednesday, Aug. 26, against Tunisia.
