Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chairman Devlet Bahceli reacted to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)’s investigation into Demiral’s celebration.

Türkiye advanced to the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 by defeating Austria 2-1 in the round of 16 match. Merih Demiral, who scored both goals, became the focal point of the match with his celebration featuring the “wolf salute.”

UEFA has initiated an investigation into Merih Demiral’s use of the wolf salute during his celebration.

The wolf salute is a sign identified with the nationalist party MHP in Türkiye, however, it is known to be used by nationalists in Türkiye in general.

MHP slams UEFA

After UEFA’s decision to investigate Demiral, MHP leader Bahceli also came out in support of Demiral, while Bahceli published a statement on his social media account criticizing this development.

Merih Demiral, who earned our nation’s appreciation and rightful praise with his goal and performance last night, has apparently disturbed many unhealthy circles both domestically and internationally by celebrating with the wolves salute.

He stated this move is extremely biased and wrong for UEFA, adding, “The wolves salute performed by our son Merih following his goal is a message from the Turkish nation to the world, and UEFA’s decision to launch an investigation into this is both intentional and a waypoint in the recent chain of dangerous provocations.”
