Many consumers arrived early in the morning, and the crowd kept growing through the day. Some people said they had waited for several hours to receive a cylinder.
The rush comes at a time when demand for liquefied petroleum (LP) gas has risen, and the public has become increasingly sensitive to any possibility of supply disruption.
Although gas distributors have stated that there is no immediate shortage, the size of the crowd in Teku reflected the anxiety among consumers.

At least 903 people have died in devastating flooding near Nepal's border with China, while the number of missing has surged to 4,247, the country's disaster authority said Monday, as rescue efforts entered a sixth day.
Nepal's disaster agency listed 3,655 missing citizens in its Monday morning update. That includes Nuwakot district, where the figure rose sharply to 1,158 from 115 reported on Sunday, and a further 562 unaccounted for in Rasuwa district.
