Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday sharply criticized Canada over what it described as Ottawa’s participation in the U.S.-led war against Iran.

Canadian officials have maintained that the country was neither consulted nor involved in offensive operations.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei accused Ottawa of seeking to appease Washington despite what he described as repeated U.S. pressure on Canadian sovereignty and trade.

In a post on the U.S. social media platform X, Baqaei pointed to U.S. references to Canada as a potential “51st state,” tariffs on Canadian goods and threats of punishment over wildfire smoke.

“Ottawa’s response: Understood, Sir!” Baqaei wrote.

He then accused Canada of participating in what he called the “U.S.-led unlawful war of choice against Iran” in an effort to appease Washington.

“What’s the reward? THIS IS NOT HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA; IT IS WASHINGTON’S FARM TEAM,” Baqaei said.

Canada has denied involvement in offensive operations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in March that Canada was prepared to assist efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, signaling Ottawa’s willingness to support broader U.S.-led efforts in the region.

Canadian officials, however, have said the country was neither consulted nor involved in offensive military operations against Iran and has no intention of participating in them.

Canada’s armed forces remain closely integrated with U.S. military command structures, according to analysts cited in the report.

Iran’s latest criticism focused on what Tehran characterized as a contradiction between Washington’s pressure on Canada and Ottawa’s support for U.S.-led regional objectives.
