Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Wednesday that NATO is preparing for a long-term confrontation with Russia, warning that Moscow is ready to use “all its military-technical means” to eliminate threats when necessary.
Zakharova made the remarks during her weekly news conference in Syktyvkar, the capital of Russia’s Komi Republic.
She said the Arctic region had become an area of geopolitical confrontation with Russia because of the actions of NATO countries, accusing the alliance of taking steps to establish military superiority in the region.
“Intense military preparations are being carried out in the immediate vicinity of our northern borders, large-scale military exercises of an offensive nature are being held, and new elements are being added to the alliance’s military structure,” Zakharova said.
“Plans to increase NATO’s military capacity indicate that it has moved from limited deterrence to the stage of preparing for a potentially long-term confrontation with Russia,” she added.
Zakharova said such activities in the north posed a direct threat to Russia’s security.
“Russia is ready to use all its military-technical means to eliminate threats when necessary,” she said.
Zakharova also referred to previous remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concerning Russian civil aviation, describing them as “blackmail” and “the state-level legitimization of air terror.”
She said countries supporting such statements were “accomplices of Kyiv.”
Zakharova also pointed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement that returning to the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement was unacceptable.
She said the agreement had not been implemented and claimed that “only the West benefited from this.”
