A Russian drone strike hit the Starokozache border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region overnight Wednesday, killing two civilians and injuring three others, Ukrainian authorities said.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said the victims were near the international road checkpoint when the drones struck.
The attack caused a major fire and forced authorities to temporarily halt passenger and vehicle traffic across the border.
Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service said the Starokozache checkpoint was targeted with strike drones and closed following the attack.
Russia also carried out overnight attacks on Kyiv.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian drone struck a 16-story building early Wednesday, prompting emergency crews to respond.
Ukrainian emergency services reported fires in the capital. Separate Ukrainian media reports said at least five people were killed and 35 wounded in a large-scale missile and drone attack, with residential buildings, a school and several warehouses damaged.
The attacks followed the resumption of Russian strikes on Kyiv on Tuesday after a brief halt during a visit by U.S. peace negotiators.
Ukrainian officials said five people were killed in the capital during Tuesday’s attacks.
