Nearly 1,400 families were displaced in western Yemen in a single day as fighting intensified between government forces and the Houthis, authorities said Wednesday.
The government-run Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps said 1,367 families were newly displaced on Sept. 8 in Taiz, Al-Hudaydah and Lahj provinces, according to a statement carried by the official Saba news agency.
The latest displacement brought the total number of families displaced across the three provinces since the beginning of September to 6,145.
The agency attributed the increase to continued military escalation and growing concerns over civilian safety.
Field teams are continuing to register displaced families, verify their locations and assess humanitarian needs while coordinating with local authorities, aid organizations and partners.
The unit called on humanitarian groups and donors to expand assistance, warning of growing needs for shelter, food, water, basic supplies and health services, as well as the possibility of further displacement.

Clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis have intensified in recent weeks, particularly in Taiz, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda, alongside airstrikes targeting Houthi positions.
On Wednesday, both sides reported clashes in Taiz, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale and Al-Hudaydah. Government-aligned forces also sent reinforcements to the strategic western coastal city of Mocha near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014, prompting a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
