Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian presidential envoy, met with US officials in Washington on Monday for talks that included discussion of potential American-Russian energy projects that could take shape after the war in Ukraine ends, a US government official told AFP.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday that Dmitriev and US officials held constructive discussions on a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and possible US-Russia energy initiatives once the war concludes.
The Washington meeting builds on a series of recent diplomatic contacts.
The official noted that the visit follows a meeting in Moscow between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as discussions the two held with Ukrainian officials in New York last week.
The renewed diplomatic activity comes as Russia has intensified daytime strikes on Kyiv using jet-powered drones, which Ukrainian forces have struggled to intercept.
Separately, The Atlantic magazine reported that President Donald Trump favors a proposal under which the United States would lift some sanctions on Russia in exchange for the release of political prisoners. The White House did not directly address the report when asked about it.
A US official told AFP that Trump is committed to continuing to play a constructive role in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and remains optimistic that a peace deal can ultimately be reached.
More than four and a half years have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, in what became Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. Despite the resumption of talks involving American mediators, a diplomatic settlement has yet to materialize.
