South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday nominated six new ministers, including new finance, defense and justice chiefs, in his first major Cabinet reshuffle since taking office in June last year, Yonhap News reported.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik announced the nominations at a news conference.
Vice Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il was nominated as finance minister, while Kang Shin-chul, a former deputy commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, was nominated as defense minister.
Vice Land Minister Hong Jee-sun was nominated as land minister, while Kim Seung-won of the ruling Democratic Party was named as the nominee for justice minister.
Rep. Yong Hye-in, floor leader of the minor Basic Income Party, was nominated as gender equality minister.
Lee So-young was nominated as minister for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Lee Won-ju, a senior official at the Environment Ministry, was also nominated as presidential aide for the newly created “megaproject” initiative.
The nominations mark Lee’s first major Cabinet reshuffle since he became president in June last year.
They come as his approval rating has recently fallen to its lowest level amid growing concerns over rising housing prices and stock market volatility.
The ministerial nominees will undergo confirmation hearings at the National Assembly.
