Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that it was deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by an explosion and fire at a military base in Canada, where at least four people were killed.

In a statement, the ministry extended its condolences to the families of the dead and to the people of Canada. It also wished “a speedy recovery to the injured.”

What happened in Alberta

The blast and fire erupted Saturday afternoon at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of Edmonton.

The Canadian Armed Forces said the fire was first reported around 4 pm local time (2200 GMT) on a training range before spreading beyond its boundaries. Strong winds hampered firefighting efforts.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that four people were killed and dozens more were seriously wounded.

He described the incident as “one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime.” Carney said the victims’ next of kin had been notified.

Canadian officials respond

Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the incident had caused casualties but did not release figures. He described the situation as “active and delicate.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada’s federal police force, are investigating, while military and civilian authorities coordinate the response. No cause for the explosion has been given.

Türkiye and Canada are both members of NATO, the transatlantic military alliance.
