Cyclists gathered for an event marking 12 years since the death of Prof. Klaus Schmidt, the archaeologist credited with discovering Gobeklitepe, a Neolithic archaeological site listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Coordinated by the Sanliurfa Metropolitan Municipality with support from the Sanliurfa Directorate of Youth and Sports, the Sanliurfa Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the Urfa Cycling Community Sports Club, and the Gobeklitepe Cycling Club, the event titled "Pedaling to Gobeklitepe in Klaus Schmidt's Footsteps" was organized.
Now in its seventh year, the memorial event brought cycling enthusiasts together at the house where Schmidt once lived. A group of 100 cyclists then set off from the city center and rode approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) to Gobeklitepe, where they toured the archaeological site.

Mustafa Aslan, deputy chairman of the Urfa Cycling Community Sports Club, said that participants had come from various cities across Türkiye to join the ride, adding, "We want to keep up this tour, which has become a ritual for us, for years to come."
Cycling enthusiast Huseyin Acar expressed his satisfaction at taking part in the event, saying, "Just like every year, this year was colorful and wonderful too."
Prof. Klaus Schmidt, whose excavation work and discoveries at Gobeklitepe shed new light on human history, died in 2014.
