Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is now home to an exhibition celebrating the people who helped preserve and promote the Turkish language across the Balkans.
Titled "Portraits Dedicated to the Turkish Language," the exhibition opened at the Skopje City Museum through a partnership between the International Balkan University (IBU) in Skopje and Bayburt University in Türkiye.
The project highlights the deep-rooted Turkish cultural heritage found throughout the Balkans, showcasing portraits of individuals who made significant contributions to the Turkish language and culture.
It stands out as a distinctive effort to spotlight the region's long historical ties to the Turkish language while safeguarding that legacy for the future.
Speaking at the opening, IBU Rector Lutfi Sunar underscored the importance of cultural and artistic initiatives, noting that the project plays a meaningful role in keeping this shared heritage alive.
Project advisor Seyhan Murtezani echoed that sentiment, saying, "The Balkans hold a significant place in the historical memory of the Turkic world. Bringing visibility to the traces of Turkish language and culture in this region is essential to passing our shared heritage on to future generations."
Project coordinator Sedat Maden added that the initiative aims to grow to 100 portraits in total.
"By bringing together figures who have contributed to the Turkish language and culture, we hope to present the rich history of the language, and the people behind it, to as wide an audience as possible," he said.
