Standing proudly for nearly eight centuries, the Alaeddin Mosque has long been a silent witness to Anatolia’s rich history. Now, the mosque takes center stage in a new promotional video released by the Nigde Governorate under the campaign “Nigde Calls You.”
The film highlights the city’s unique blend of historical grandeur and natural beauty, inviting visitors to step into a world where Seljuk craftsmanship meets breathtaking landscapes.
The video, part of the Nigde’s Values series, presents detailed insights into the mosque’s historical and architectural importance. Built in 1223 during the reign of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I of the Sultanate of Rum, the mosque was commissioned by Zeyneddin Besare, the governor of Nigde.
The building’s inscription identifies its chief architects as Gazi and Siddik, reflecting the origins of this enduring Seljuk structure.
The mosque features a three-domed design and an internal "aydinlik feneri" lighting system that allows sunlight to filter through the domes, creating striking visual depth. Additionally, the entrance stone bears a crowned female silhouette, visible between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., which demonstrates the Seljuk builders’ advanced knowledge of astronomy and physics.
The film also emphasizes the symbolic motifs in the mosque’s stonework, representing divine harmony, infinity, and the Seljuks’ artistic ideals.
